Heifer Station Merlot 2019 Vintage

In 2019 the drought continued. Very little rainfall during the winter meant we commenced the vintage with very little subsoil moisture. However, given the 20 year old vines they sustained themselves during a difficult forth coming season.

We adopted a conservation approach to pruning, with lighter than usual bud numbers. Shoot thinning occurred early so we had a lighter fruit across the vines. With a forecast hot summer ahead no leaf plucking occurred, to avoid sunburn to the fruit.

Irrigation water was not available, so the vines did it all alone. Harvest arrived early (mid-March) with excellent fruit in quality and condition.

After fermentation (natural yeast) the wine was split between 1/3 new French Oak and 2/3 older French Oak barrels, for a period of 15 months. Bottling took place mid-August 2020.

Tasting notes

Dark red to purple with density and depth. Classic leafy Merlot fruit style with abundant red berry fruit aromatics. Subtle cedar and cigar box lift adding to the aromatic interest. Tobacco, dark currant and red berries drive the palate profile with fine tannin structure and soft juicy acidity giving length. Definitive Cool Climate Merlot in dark silky robes, making it an excellent food style wine.
